Guangzhou....SUNSHINE!!!

We made it to Guangzhou and there is not nearly as much smog and the sun is shining!! Just what we needed after a long, dreary week in Zhengzhou. From what we have seen so far, the city is beautiful. No mopeds speeding by on the sidewalks, not as much smog, and its warm!! This gave us the pick me up we needed to get through the rest of this week! The hotel is super nice and there is a lot of restaurants close by. We are excited about exploring this new area!

Jeff started off his bday with our friends giving him some authentic Chinese birthday presents! :) Thanks Kevin and Stacy! :)

Kevin wanted to be sure Jeff had one of these smog masks as a souvenir. Everyone in ZZ wore these. LOL!

One lat picture with our guide Rita. She worked hard for us this week...to the hospital, to the pharmacy to get meds, and calling Dr. Steve all week! :) She was so sweet.

Mayleigh eating her french fries!! Bad habits are starting right here!

We stopped by the 7 Eleven and I know its no diet dr. pepper polar pop, but it's about as close as I am going to get!

Snacks anyone?? GROSS!!

Here is a picture of Mayleigh just so you can get an idea of how tiny she is!! She was just under 20 lbs. the other day when she saw the nurse!

This was the blanket that only lasted about an hour. Then she cried at bedtime for her sweater!! We gave in. Back to that dirty, nasty thing!

Sounds like we are going to do some touring of the city tomorrow morning and then get our Visa paperwork ready in the afternoon. Monday we head to the kids medical exams. Happy to say Mayleigh is FINALLY fever free after 5 days!! She ate a little bit more food today. Unfortunately we have figured out that she likes french fries and suckers! :/ Not the best diet. A friend in our travel group had these crunchy french fry things in a can and Mayleigh loved them. We let her eat the whole can. Probably not great...but she hadn't eaten in days! We were just so excited to see her eat and show some enthusiasm about it.
Well, Jeff didn't get his birthday wish of a smile from Mayleigh but tonight we were laying in bed and Mayleigh was laying with me, Jeff sat down and she looked up at him and reached for him. That made his night! It is nice that she will go to either one of us. But we really havent seen any other improvements with her. She is still crying a lot when we put her down on the bed. She will not walk when we put her down. She usually just folds to the ground crying hysterically. Sometimes we can get her to walk to us about 4 steps. Baby steps though....we were excited that she sat up at meals and ate a little and she seems a little more alive when we are out and about. She is looking around more and taking things in. She still occasionally turns her head and closes her eyes when she doesnt want us looking at her. So heartbreaking! :( Oh, and the sweater!! She had it pretty much all day. It is so dirty and gross. Tonight as we got home from dinner she was crying and holding her arm out reaching for the dipaer bag and we knew that was what she wanted. Jeff decided to give her a different blanket instead. She was so desperate for that securtity that she started sucking on that one! At least its clean and is cute with pink hearts on it! :) We'll see if it lasts!!
Please keep praying for Mayleigh to open up and realize our love for her. We so desperately want her to know how much we love her. Cant wait for those sad eyes to smile and light up. It hurts my heart looking at her sad eyes day in and day out.

  1. Hi Erin
Crying as I read this and praying so much for her. She will come to love you both and your family - you are toooooo loveable to not win her over quickly. ;-) but I can only imagine how tired, homesick and weary you are. Bless you sweet Erin and Jeff! We are praying for you around the clock!

  2. Hi Erin, The french fries may be a bad habit, but it is one of the approved (and highly encouraged) foods for our girls SN!! There was a couple in our adoption group who's 1st son sucked/chewed on a was cloth All The Time. I think the orphanages encourage the children to use them as pacifiers to self-sooth.

    Cheers,
